2018 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir | The Deep End

92 POINTS, WINE ENTHUSIAST

Tasting notes from the winemaker:  The wine showcases the complexity the Anderson Valley region produces with balance, purity and persistent flavors of dark red fruits and earthy undertones of beetroot and wet earth.

The silky texture is balanced by bright acidity and fine-grained tannins.

This wine includes fruit from the Abel, Wendling, Romani, and Klindt vineyards.

The blend captures the complex mélange of soils located in the Deep End of Anderson Valley.

Perfectly aged to drink now or cellar for another 5 years.

  • Weathered shale soils with veins of iron rich clay

  • Eight massal selection clones

Wendling Vineyard

Sourced from the last vineyard in the Deep End of the valley, our blocks of selection massal clone pinot are planted meter by meter and farmed organically. The cold Deep End climate and low vigor soils produce small amounts of concentrated aromatic wine with dark red fruit and balanced with vibrant acidity.

  • Planted in 2009

  • Bear wallow-wolfey-ornbaun soil profile

  • Weathered shale & sandstone soils

  • Mostly massal selection clones with wadensvil & calera

  • Located in the Deep End

  • Farmer: Paul Ardzrooni

Romani Vineyard

High elevations with intense, ocean driven breezes produce bright, aromatic fruit. A micro-% of the mélange, adding structure & a tannic rib base to the wine.

  • Planted in 1999

  • Pommard clones

  • Located in the Deep End

  • Farmer: Paul Ardzrooni

Klindt Vineyard

Our Estate Vineyard. These 8 ½ acres of Pinot Noir sit on a south by southwest facing slope. These rocky soils, coupled with the cold climate of the Deep End, cause the vines to struggle and naturally limit production to small amounts of intense fruit.

  • Planted in 1998

  • Sustainably farmed

  • 18 inches of heavy clay loam overlying a layer of fractured rock

  • 35% Pommard clones 4 & 5  provide the core of the wines with their contribution of red and black fruit and firm acid. 20% is clone 115, adding bright fruit tones, aroma and depth, and 20% is clone 113, giving structure, spice and aromatics. The remaining smaller blocks are 667 and 777 with red fruit, chocolate and earth notes.
